Sunday 8/18 – a cool and calm August

For the first time in Judah’s life, he was able to go two full weeks without a doctors appointment or hospital visit. August has been very nice to Judah, and these last two weeks have given him a lot of time to just play and have fun and be a regular baby. Unfortunately due to two of our day shift nurses currently out with health issues (and we wish them the best and hope they take the time needed to heal!) it has made for some long days alone for mommy and Judah while daddy is at work. Due to Judah’s tracheostomy, it is dangerous to have only one person in the car with him in case of emergency, so without a nurse it is difficult to go too far out into the world. That doesn’t stop Judah and mommy from having fun all over the house and outside on the deck, and when we do have a nurse, they can keep their normal routine of going to the library, museums, parks, or just out for a walk in the neighborhood.

Just last weekend we got to celebrate Judah’s 11 month birthday! We are so amazed at how far he has come and how much he has been through in just this first year, and we couldn’t be more proud of him. On his birthday Judah got to go to temple for Saturday morning services, took a walk around the beautiful Biblical Gardens at Rodef Shalom, and then went out to lunch with his Grandma and Grandpa, and finally falling asleep before the Steelers first preseason game.

Judah’s heart remains strong, and he continues to push forward with his weaning and time off of the ventilator. Judah is now completely off ventilator support for almost his entire awake time. Overnight and when he takes naps, we still put him on the ventilator to provide additional support, but his doctors have and continue to work aggressively to get him off the vent as quickly as he will take. Just a month ago Judah was only off the vent for about an hour of his day, and now he spends only about an hour on the vent. It truly is amazing to see him doing so well off the vent, and when he is disconnected, all he wants to do is run around and climb on things and play with toys and laugh and smile. Judah loves to wave his hands and clap, and is really working hard to take those first unassisted steps.

He (and we) continue to thank you all for your support, love, concern, thoughts, and strength. We are so happy to be able to continue to bring good news about Judah’s development and health. Although there are always ups and downs, overall Judah is doing very well. Thank you again, with all of our hearts.

  1. On this last picture, I can totally see Nate in Judah! Thank you both for good news and job you guys are doing! Way to go! Love you all!

  2. You guys are all doing great! But why are you guys putting him right in the way of that polar bear and making him fight off wooly mammoths!?!? I know he could knock ’em all out with cuteness, but come on. At least wait until he’s one before you make him fight crime and wild animals 😛
